GROWING ONIONS FROM SEED

One of the things we’ve learnt about growing onions is that if you grow them from seed then you need to take account of their long growing season.  In the past, we’ve been slow off the mark and lacked the organisation to start sowing early.  As a consequence, we’ve never had a crop that has reached full maturity.  An obvious solution, which most people opt for, is to grow them from onion sets instead.  This way half of the growth has already occurred before the onset of spring, leaving plenty of time for the crop to mature.

However, in these frugal times, we’re making sure that we use up all of our remaining seed stocks and it is for this reason that we’ve been busy sowing Stoccarde and Bedfordshire Champion cultivars under glass (i.e. on the kitchen windowsill).  Over the past few days the seedlings have been showing their eager heads, which is a great motivator for getting on with this year’s planting plan.

Once our seed stocks are used up, we plan to grow leeks and red onions instead of the cheaper white varieties named above.  But before we move on we’re determined to nurture a decent onion crop to full maturity, knowing that each one of them began life as a tiny seed.

Here’s what we look at whilst doing the washing up.
