In late autumn, we always dig a trench where our beans will be grown the following spring and gradually fill it with kitchen waste over the winter months. All of our vegetable peelings go into this, along with eggshells, egg boxes and the occasional shovel of our homemade compost. This form of trench composting provides a good supply of moisture and nutrients for our hungry bean plants and has led to good yields.
Today, after such a warm spell of weather, we decided it was time to fill in the trench to allow the soil enough time to settle before we plant out. We’ll be growing borlotti beans again this year and will also plant a row of peas in front of the beans. Peas occupy a lot of space for the yield they produce, but there’s nothing nicer than picking a few pods on a summer evening and eating them fresh like little sweets. Our daughter loves these. George does too.
